Itinerary

It is difficult to plan our itinerary because I am not able to realistically predict what we will do each day and where we will be. That being said, we do have a route to use as a guideline for our road trip around Iceland. According to this outline for our 10 day adventure, there will be approximate locations for each day

Day 1:

Depart from the International Airport Keflavik in our rental car. The route will take us along the Reykjanes peninsula and head towards the capital of Iceland. ON the way there we can can stop at the Bliue Lagoon and stay the first night in Reykjavik.

Day 2:

Some possible places of interest today could be theThingvellir National Park or the Geysir hot-spring area. We would spend some time exploring this area and then head south east to set up camp.

Day 3 :

Head South East to see the Eyfjafjallajokull volcano and from there drive to the mighty Skogafoss waterfall. After this, we would drive to the Eldgjarhraun lava field, which is the largest one in the world. Due to Iceland’s wild camping permit, we would set up camp somewhere nearby for the night.

Day 4:

Today we would drive to the Skaftafell waterfall in the Vatnajokull National Park. Hiking around this area is said to be beautiful. From there we would drive to the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and possibly take a boat tour.

Day 5:

Today we would visit the Eastern end of the island to view the famous Icelandic Fjords. After hiking through the area, we would drive to the nearby fishing villages to experience some small scale Icelandic culture. From there we would drive to Lake Lagarfljot to set up camp.

Day 6:

The points of interest today are the Dettifoss waterfall and Lake Myvatn. The ring road will lead us directly to the Dettifoss waterfall and we would enjoy the site of the area for a few hours. Before we reach Lake Myvatn, we will visit the Viti crater turned lake to take some highly recommended photos. Our voyage to Lake Myvatn would then commence, which is said to be most beautiful in the early evening.

Day 7:

We would spend most of the day at Lake Myvatn to explore its wonders. We would hike up to the tuff ring volano Hverfjall to see an expansive view of the whole area. After exploring the area, we would head to the Jardbodin geothermal spa to swim. Again, thanks to Iceland’s wild camping permit, we would set up camp in an area suitable for the night.

Day 8:

This day takes us North to visit Husavik and take a whale watching tour. We would then drive to see the Godafoss waterfall, and then visit the Northern town of Akureyri to explore and stock up on food and supplies if necessary. We would end our day by heading West to the Skagafjordur Fjord, a famous horse-breeding area to set up camp.

Day 9:

Now on the Western end of the country, we would visit the beautiful Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. After exploring the area, we would head to Deildartunguhver, Iceland’s largest hot spring for a quick swim. Our day would end in Hvalfjordur, which is said to be a peaceful natural area perfect for camping. Horseback riding and river rafting are activities available in this area, and depending on our monetary situation, may be something we will partake in.

Day 10:

This day concludes our trip. We would spend it further exploring the capital of Reykjavik, as it has many museums and tourist shops. We would drop off our vehicle at roughly 1 in the afternoon, and from there wait to board our flight home.
